MEN OF ELOHIM

The phrase "man of Elohim" or "men of Elohim" is frequently used in Scriptures with reference to people whose lives were dedicated to serve Yahweh, to follow in his ways, to listen to his voice and to make known his Word to others. In many cases this phrase was used to refer to a prophet – someone called specifically to speak "for" or "on behalf of" Yahweh. Prophets were sometimes also to speak on behalf of people, "before" (or in the presence of) Yahweh. This may be seen in the first instance where reference is made to a prophet in Scriptures, Bereshit (Genesis) 20:7. The word "prophet" literally means to speak for, on behalf of or before (someone). Sometimes people not specifically known as prophets are also called "men of Elohim" and in the Post-Messianic Scriptures believers are challenged to truly live as people of Elohim. In Scriptures Mosheh, Dawid, EliYah, Elisha, Yahuchanan and Timothy (among others) are called "men of Elohim". As a whole, the call of Scriptures is that those who desire to please Yahweh should truly be people of Yahweh – people who reflect his character, people who walk in his ways, and people who act according to his will.

  1. Men of Elohim’s most important legacy is to be instruments and mediators of Yahweh’s blessings. Devarim (Deuteronomy) 33:1. And this is the blessing with which Mosheh the man of Elohim blessed the children of Yisrael before his death.
  2. Men of Elohim are not willing to exchange obedience to Yahweh for an attitude of man-pleasing, in order to gain in a materialistic sense. 1 Melachim (1 Kings) 13:8. But the man of Elohim said to the sovereign, "If you were to give me half your house, I do not go in with you, nor do I eat bread nor drink water in this place.
  3. Men of Elohim are people of integrity, in whose mouths the Word of Yahweh is truth. 1 Melachim (1 Kings) 17:24. And the woman said to Eliyahu, "Now by this I know that you are a man of Elohim, and that the word of Yahweh in your mouth is truth."
  4. Men of Elohim are focused on the needs of others and will not be too proud to acknowledge that there are things that they truly don’t know. 2 Melachim (2 Kings) 4:27. And she came to the man of Elohim at the hill, and she caught him by the feet, but Gehazi came near to push her away. But the man of Elohim said, "Leave her alone, for her being is bitter in her, and Yahweh has hidden it from me, and has not revealed it to me."
  5. Men of Elohim, in their behaviour, are aiming at bringing people to an understanding that there is no true Elohim on earth, but the Elohim of Yisraél. 2 Melachim (2 Kings) 5:15. And he returned to the man of Elohim, he and all his company, and came and stood before him and said, "See, now I know that there is no Elohim in all the earth, except in Yisrael. "
  6.

  7. Men of Elohim are people who are truly weeping over sin, unrighteousness and the way people in this world are neglecting the commands of Yahweh. 2 Melachim 8:11-12. And he looked at him steadily until he was ashamed. Then the man of Elohim wept. And Hazael said, "Why is my master weeping?" And he answered, "Because I know the evil that you are going to do to the children of Yisrael: Setting their strongholds on fire, and slaying their young men with the sword, and dashing their children, and ripping open their women with child."
  8. Men of Elohim are people who become angry when Yahweh’s honour is at stake, or when the Enemy is given a foothold in people’s lives. 2 Melachim (2 Kings) 13:18-19. Then he said, "Take the arrows," and he took them. And he said to the sovereign of Yisrael, "Strike the ground," and he struck three times, and stopped. And the man of Elohim was wroth with him and said, "You should have smitten five or six times, then you would have smitten Aram till its utter destruction. But now you shall smite Aram only three times."
  9. Men of Elohim are people who bear witness to the light, without claiming that they themselves are the light. Yahuchanan (John) 1:6-8. There was a man sent from Elohim, whose name was Yochanan. This one came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all might believe through him. He was not that Light, but that he might bear witness of that Light.
  10. Men of Elohim are not mere passive believers – they flee from unrighteousness, they pursue righteousness, they fight the good fight and they lay hold on everlasting life. 1 Timothy 6:11-12. But you, O man of Elohim, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, reverence, belief, love, endurance, meekness. Fight the good fight of the belief, lay hold on everlasting life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession before many witnesses.
  11. Men of Elohim are fitted and equipped for every good work because they utilise all Scriptures as a source for teaching, reproof, correction and instruction in righteousness. 2 Timothy 3:14-17. But you, stay in what you have learned and trusted, having known from whom you have learned, and that from a babe you have known the Set-apart Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for deliverance through belief in Messiah Y'shua. All Scripture is breathed by Elohim and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for setting straight, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of Elohim might be fitted, equipped for every good work.
