SEVEN IMPORTANT QUESTIONS CONCERNING THE LAW

How these questions are answered in the New Covenant Scriptures

  1. Was the law given by Yahweh good or bad?
  2. 1Co 9:9-10 For it has been written in the Torah of Mosheh, "You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain." Is it about oxen Elohim is concerned? Or does He say it because of us all? (Literally: "Or does He indeed say it for our sakes?") For this was written because of us (Literally: "for our sakes"), that he who ploughs should plough in expectation, and the thresher in expectation of sharing.

Rom 7:12 So that the Torah truly is set-apart, and the command set-apart, and righteous, and good.

  3. Is keeping the law not equal to walking in the flesh?
  4. Rom 7:5 "For when we were in the flesh, the passions of sins, through the Torah, were working in our members to bear fruit to death."

This verse should be read together with Rom 7:14, which comes from the same chapter and context: "For we know that the Torah is Spiritual, but I am fleshly, sold under sin."

Gal 5:22-23: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustworthiness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no Torah." This is a confirmation of what is written in Yechezkel 36:27 "I shall put My Spirit within you. And I shall cause you to walk in My laws and guard My right-rulings and shall do them." Wanting to keep the law is the result of being filled with the Spirit.

  5. Does Sha’ul not say that true believers have been released from the Torah?
  6. Rom 7:6 "But now we have been released from the Torah, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in newness of Spirit and not in oldness of letter."

In what sense have we been released (Gr: "katargeo")? The same word and context are being used in Rom 6:6-7: "Knowing this, that our old man was impaled with Him, so that the body of sin might be rendered powerless (or released, Gr: "katargeo), to serve sin no longer. For he who has died has been made right from sin." It is clear that those who believe Messiah have been released from serving sin, not released from the responsibility to obey Yahweh and his Word.

  7. Is it not true that the Torah is equal to the oldness of the letter?
  8. Rom 7:6 "But now we have been released from the Torah, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in newness of Spirit and not in oldness of letter."

What do the words "in oldness of letter" refer to, in the context of Rom 7? The answer may be found in verse 5: "For when we were in the flesh, the passions of sins, (which we came to know) through the Torah, were working in our members to bear fruit to death." Thus, the "oldness of the letter" refers to the time before people came to know the Messiah, that is, the time when they only knew the passions of sin, and not the urge, caused by the Spirit of Yahweh, to do what is right.

Sha’ul used the same word, "gramma(ta)" (which he had used for "letter" in Rom 7) when he wrote to Timothy in 2 Tim 3:15-17: "From a babe you have known the Set-apart Scriptures ("grammata"), which are able to make you wise for deliverance through belief in Messiah Y'shua. All Scripture is breathed by Elohim and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for setting straight, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of Elohim might be fitted, equipped for every good work." Here we can clearly see that it was never Sha’ul’s intention to discredit the Scriptures as such, nor the Torah contained within the Scriptures.

  9. What part of the law should we listen to – the Ten Commandments, or the rest too?
  10. Mat 4:4 But He answering, said, "It has been written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of Yahweh .’ "

Rom 10:8 But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart"– that is, the word of belief which we are proclaiming"

This is a quote from Devarim 30:11-14: "For this command which I am commanding you today (referring to all the statutes and precepts given through Mosheh, not only the 10 Commandments), it is not too hard for you, nor is it far off … for the Word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart – to do it."

  11. Did Sha’ul subject himself to the authority of the Torah (in the broader sense of the word)?
  12. Act 23:5 And Sha’ul said, "I did not know, brothers, that he was the high priest, for it has been written, ‘You shall not speak evil of the ruler of your people.’ "

2Co 6:16-18 And what union has the Dwelling Place of Elohim with idols? For you are a Dwelling Place of the living Elohim, as Elohim has said, "I shall dwell in them and walk among them, and I shall be their Elohim, and they shall be My people." Therefore, "Come out from among them and be separate, says Yahweh , and do not touch what is unclean, and I shall receive you. And I shall be a Father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to Me, says Yahweh  the Almighty." Is Sha’ul only speaking of that which is spiritually inclean? No, the very next verse says very clearly: "Having, then, these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of the flesh and spirit, perfecting set-apartness in the fear of Elohim" (2Co 7:1).

  13. Do we not run the risk of losing our joy and our peace when we subject ourselves to the Torah?

Rom 7:22-23 For I delight in the Torah of Elohim according to the inward man, but I see another law in my members, battling against the Torah of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

Rom 8:6-9 "For the mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace. Because the mind of the flesh is enmity towards Elohim, for it does not subject itself to the Torah of Elohim, neither indeed is it able, and those who are in the flesh are unable to please Elohim. But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of Elohim dwells in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Messiah, this one is not His." Her we see, once again, that the life and peace promised to those who are filled with the Spirit of Yahweh, can only be experienced by people who subject themselves to the Torah of Elohim.
