THIS IS THE DAY
(7/7/2007)The words of Tehillim 118:24 are well known and often quoted: "This is the day Yahweh has made, Let us rejoice and be glad in it." What shall we say about this day that we’re in right now? Each day means something different for different people. For some people certain days are especially important, because they stand out as days on which significant events in their lives took place, or days on which certain personal goals were achieved. For others, those same days may mean nothing more than any other day of the year. Days and their importance are linked to individual persons and individual communities and even individual countries – what stands out for one individual or one group, may have no special meaning for another, whatsoever.
Many people, however, may feel TODAY is more significant than most other days. If for no other reason, then simply because it is the SEVENTH day of the SEVENTH month of the year two thousand and SEVEN. Surely, this rare "coincidence" must qualify today as a unique and very significant day. We know that in the Hebrew language and context the number seven carries the meaning of completeness, and fullness and abundance and rest. So if, perhaps, it is your birthday today, or your marriage anniversary or your day of graduation or even your day of retirement, then you would like to think that this day and this year is going to be something very special. And, indeed, you have every reason to think along these lines. If your eyes are fixed upon Yahweh, the Creator who worked six days and rested on the seventh, if your trust is in Him who has the reputation that He brings completeness and fulfilment to all his promises, then this day should be special to you. If you listen to Him who stated clearly that it is his desire to bless those who belong to Him with abundance, then the prominence in this day of the number seven should most definitely stand out as something extraordinary.
But then there is also the perspective of Tehillim 118:24: "This is the day Yahweh has made, Let us rejoice and be glad in it" – meaning: Every day is a day that Yahweh has made; any day should be worthy enough in our eyes to rejoice over it; all days are special, because the Almighty’s hand is upon them. Whether it is a day with special numbers attached, or not, we have every reason to rejoice and be glad, because Yahweh has made it for us to enjoy and be blessed. Whether it is a day filled with highlights and adventure, or not, it is still a day that Yahweh has made. Whether it is a day on which we feel on top of the world, or not, it is still a day that Yahweh has made with care and precision. Let us never forget or neglect the significance and importance of each new day that we receive from his hand! When we think about this day, let us remember the following:
